What causes secondary HPT?
When your kidneys fail, they no longer do many of the things that your body needs them to do. For example, they can’t filter waste, which is why you may be on dialysis.1
Healthy kidneys help balance important lab values, including PTH, calcium, and phosphorus. When you are on dialysis, your kidneys are no longer able to keep these lab values balanced on their own.2
Most people with kidney failure make too much PTH. When your PTH is too high, you develop secondary HPT. This condition causes your phosphorus and calcium to be out of balance.3
Secondary HPT may cause bone disease and other serious problems.4,5
Keeping your PTH, calcium and phosphorus lab values balanced can help you manage secondary HPT.5,6 Talk with your health care team about how to keep your labs in range.
