Medicines to help manage secondary HPT
If you have secondary HPT, your doctor may prescribe different medicines to help balance your lab values. These medicines may include:
Sensipar® (also called cinacalcet) is a prescription medicine that helps lower PTH levels by telling your parathyroid glands to stop releasing too much PTH into your blood. It also helps lower your calcium and phosphorus.1
Vitamin D helps lower your PTH. It may be a pill or it may be given during dialysis through the machine.2
Phosphate binders are medicines that keep your body from absorbing too much phosphorus from your food.3 Phosphate binders are available by prescription or over-the-counter.
Take the medicines your doctor prescribes
It is important to take the medications your doctor prescribes so you can keep your lab values balanced. Talk to your health care team about which medications you should take to manage secondary HPT.
